Las 4C, sin misterio.The 4Cs, made simple.

Quilates, color, pureza y corte.

Carat, color, clarity and cut. GIA founder Robert M. Shipley coined the term “4Cs” in the 1940s, and since the early 1950s they’ve been the basis of GIA’s grading system, now the universal way to assess any diamond.12 Here you’ll see what each one means, what its levels look like and what the 4Cs still leave out.

In GIA’s own terms: Carat weight, Color, Clarity and Cut.1

01

Quilates: el peso, no el tamaño.Carat: weight, not size.

One carat weighs 200 milligrams and is divided into 100 points, so a 0.50 ct diamond is what the trade calls a “fifty-pointer.”34 Because carat measures weight,3 two diamonds of the same weight can look different in size face up.

Cut matters here too. A shallower diamond looks bigger face up, but if it’s too shallow it loses brilliance;4 one that’s too deep hides part of its weight where you can’t see it.2 According to GIA, a well-proportioned diamond reflects light across its whole surface and can look larger.5

Equal weight doesn’t mean equal diamonds. What counts is all four Cs together.3

0.50 ct ≈ 5.2 mm (aprox.approx. 4.9–5.4 mm)

0.75 ct ≈ 5.9 mm (aprox.approx. 5.6–6.2 mm)

4 ct ≈ 10.3 mm (aprox.approx. 9.8–10.8 mm)

5 ct ≈ 11.1 mm (aprox.approx. 10.6–11.6 mm)

Depending on its depth, a 1 ct round measures roughly 6.20 to 6.80 mm across.4 The other sizes are approximate, calculated from that range.

Color: cuanto menos, mejor.Color: the less, the better.

In colorless diamonds, color grading is really about the absence of color. GIA’s scale runs from D, colorless, to Z, light yellow, brown or gray.6 The steps from one letter to the next are so subtle that grading is done under controlled lighting, by comparing each diamond with others of known grade.6

Clarity: what a loupe reveals.

Almost every diamond has tiny marks. Those inside are called inclusions; those on the surface, blemishes.10 Clarity is graded under 10x magnification, and many of these marks can’t be seen with the naked eye.10 Location matters too: an inclusion near the edge affects the grade less than one right under the table.11

Cut: the C that makes the others shine.

Cut covers a diamond’s proportions, the arrangement of its facets and its finish: everything that shapes how it handles light.12 It’s the only one of the 4Cs the cutter directly controls, and the hardest to assess.13 That’s why two diamonds identical in every other respect can differ greatly in beauty.13

Keep in mind that GIA gives a cut grade only to round brilliants. Other shapes get grades for polish and symmetry, but not for cut.5

Más allá de las 4CBeyond the 4Cs

Lo que realmente ves es la luz. What you actually see is light.

When you look at a diamond, you don’t see a lab report. You see how it returns light. Every facet and every angle affects how much light reaches your eyes.2 That’s why, for many people, cut is the most important of the 4Cs.2

White light split into the colors of the rainbow: flashes of red, blue or orange as you rock the diamond under spotlights.2

The sparkle and the play of light and dark areas you see whenever the diamond, the light or you move.1213

In the video, the diamond tilts: watch the pattern of light and dark areas shift and the sparkles jump.

Each cut grade covers a range of proportions, so diamonds with the same grade can differ in brilliance, fire and pattern.25 Same grade, different light.

And top grades are now the norm: GIA itself says a Triple Excellent diamond (Excellent cut, polish and symmetry) is easy to find.15

Los certificadosLab reports

Pocos certificados miden la luz.Few lab reports measure light.

Most lab reports describe a diamond: its weight, color, clarity and measurements. Only a few assess how it handles light. Here’s what each one measures.

Rounds only. It considers seven factors: brightness, fire, scintillation, weight ratio, durability, polish and symmetry.5 To build it, GIA used computer modeling of light across tens of thousands of proportion sets, then validated the results with more than 70,000 observations of diamonds.165 For each diamond, the grade comes from its proportions and design, not from a direct reading of its light.17

AGS Ideal

Software “shines” rays of light into a 3D scan of the diamond and traces their path, face up and tilted.17 It rates brightness, fire and contrast on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is AGS Ideal.17 Today GIA issues the AGS Ideal Report as a supplement, only for diamonds that score 0, in rounds and some other shapes.1718 It includes an ASET map unless it’s ordered without one.17

GCAL 8X

It requires Excellent on eight criteria: polish, external symmetry, proportions, optical brilliance, fire, scintillation, optical symmetry and, for rounds, hearts and arrows (for fancy shapes, shape aesthetics).1920 Brilliance and optical symmetry are measured on photographs of the diamond itself, not a model,2122 and scintillation on a video of the diamond in nine positions.22 According to GCAL, fewer than 1% of Excellent rounds achieve it.19

Corazones y flechasHearts and arrows

Through a special viewer, a precisely cut round shows eight even hearts and eight even arrows, a sign that its facets are well aligned. There’s no universal standard: labs and sellers apply their own criteria.2324

Even the best report doesn’t tell the whole story. GIA notes that high optical precision doesn’t always translate into high light performance,18 and GCAL acknowledges that every diamond’s brilliance image looks slightly different.21 Two diamonds with the same report don’t necessarily return the same light.

That’s why, beyond the report, we measure every diamond’s light.
